About acupuncture and TCM

The practice of acupuncture is part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and has been an established method of treatment for over 2,000 years. It specifically activates the body's healing abilities and contributes to better health. Fine needles are used to target specific points on the body to restore your sense of wellbeing. Acupuncture can help with a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain to stress-related symptoms. TCM also plays an important role in preventing illness.

Acupuncture treatment
Acupuncture has proved particularly useful for the following symptoms:
  1. 1. Back or neck pain
  2. 2. Migraine and headaches
  3. 3. Joint pain & osteoarthritis
  4. 4. Menstrual symptoms
  1. 5. Allergies and asthma
  2. 6. Sleep problems and anxiety
  3. 7. Stress-related symptoms
  4. 8. Jaw joint problems
The effects of acupuncture are closely linked to the body's energy flow. Disruptions to this flow can lead to illness and pain. Placing needles at specific points on the body can harmonise the energy flow and activate the body's self-healing abilities. The needles are inserted painlessly and without side effects.

What happens during an acupuncture session?

Your first appointment starts with a detailed discussion of your medical history and your current concerns, followed by Chinese pulse, tongue, abdominal and meridian diagnosis. Together, these give me a comprehensive picture of your symptoms and general health. I then develop an individual treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs.
During treatment I place fine needles precisely at acupuncture points along the body's energy pathways. These points are directly connected to particular organs and areas of the body, allowing targeted treatment. The treatment itself is completely painless, and many patients find it pleasant. This also applies to children. You can relax during treatment and feel the positive effects of acupuncture.
Depending on the condition, the following forms of acupuncture are used:
  • – Classical Chinese acupuncture (Ping Shen)
  • – Microsystem acupuncture (ear, head, hand)
  • – Body-oriented psychotherapy (according to J. V. Müller)
  • – Laser acupuncture (especially for children)
  • – Classical Japanese acupuncture
  • – Pain acupuncture according to Doane, Tan and Master Tong
  • – Toyo Hari (a specialised form of Japanese acupuncture)
  • – Engaging Vitality
Acupuncture is an established, effective method for treating a wide range of symptoms, including pain, stress and sleep problems.

Fees and insurance

German private health insurance and supplementary cover for Heilpraktiker treatment may reimburse acupuncture fees, depending on your individual policy. A Heilpraktiker is a German licensed non-medical practitioner.
I charge for acupuncture services in accordance with the fee schedule for Heilpraktiker (GebüH). An acupuncture session costs 150 euros. The fee is also 150 euros when combined with other therapies. In exceptional cases, short treatments for acute symptoms cost €75. For German or international health insurance, check your individual policy before booking. Ask specifically whether acupuncture provided by a Heilpraktiker in Germany is covered, whether you need a referral or prior authorisation, and which invoices or other documents are required for a claim. You are welcome to contact me with questions about the treatment fee.

Frequently asked questions

Which conditions can acupuncture treat?

Chinese acupuncture has proved useful for a wide range of conditions, including back pain, migraine, menstrual symptoms, digestive problems, allergies and sleep problems. In TCM, acupuncture is understood to harmonise the flow of vital energy (Qi) in the body and thereby contribute to healing.

Which health insurers cover TCM?

Cover for traditional Chinese medicine varies by insurer and policy. Before your appointment, ask your insurer whether your policy covers the planned treatment and the practitioner providing it. This is relevant both to German health insurance and to international or expat health plans.

How long does acupuncture take to work?

How quickly the effects of acupuncture become noticeable depends on the condition and the patient's individual health. For acute pain, significant relief is achieved after the first session in almost all cases, while chronic conditions may require several sessions. An acupuncture session usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Several sessions are often needed to achieve a lasting improvement or recovery.

Does acupuncture help with back pain?

Back pain can be caused by a wide range of factors, such as muscle tension or slipped discs. Acupuncture can help relieve pain and improve back mobility. It also helps release tension and relax the muscles. Placing needles at specific acupuncture points is intended to restore the flow of energy in the body, which can contribute to healing.
